More than 25% of American youth experience a serious traumatic event before their 16th birthday. These students often experience academic failure, as well as higher rates of absenteeism, suspensions and expulsions. Adults who have experienced trauma often adopt health risk behaviors including eating disorders, smoking, substance abuse, self harm, and sexual promiscuity.
The antidote to trauma is resilience; and we can help individuals build resilience through trauma-informed care, and trauma-sensitive schools.
